WA Liberal Party vow to reintroduce vital healthcare services in regions, including Carnarvon maternity

Member for North West Central Merome Beard has vowed to reintroduce Carnarvon maternity services and other vital health services in regional WA if the WA Liberal Party is voted back into Government. The Liberals will commit to establishing a $400 million Regional Health Development Initiative if the party is successful in next year’s State election, aimed at giving people in regional WA better access to health care. Ms Beard said the funding, rolled out over four years, would improve health outcomes and reduce travel needed for regional residents to access services. Priorities in the Mid West-Gascoyne included the return of Carnarvon maternity services, Meekatharra Hospital upgrades, and attracting and retaining staff at nursing posts across the region, Ms Beard said. “The Gascoyne Mid West health system has been in steady decline under the Cook Labor Government, leaving many in the bush without the basic care and health services they need, and left to travel vast distances, incurring significant costs,” she said. “This announcement aligns with advice, such as the recent Royal Flying Doctor Service’s Best for the Bush, Rural and Remote Health Baseline 2023 report, which called for better primary health care in regional communities. “This vital funding will ensure some of our long-awaited and overdue key projects such as the Meekatharra Hospital and Carnarvon maternity services will be delivered and much-needed ongoing improvements to regional nursing posts and services will be addressed.” Ms Beard said the initiative would help close the gap in regional health care at a time when the need for quality health services and infrastructure continued to grow. “The Carnarvon maternity service is something we desperately need,” she said. “It’s definitely a burden on regional families and patients that are impacted.” The WA Liberals, if voted into Government, say they will spend the first $60m on Margaret River Hospital upgrades.
