Rain wreaked havoc on the Narrogin and Districts Netball Association at the weekend, with only one senior game completed due to a water leak through the roof of the Narrogin Regional Leisure Centre.

Despite money being spent on the roof by the Shire of Narrogin over the past decade, Saturday’s heavy rain resulted in masses of water finding its way onto all three indoor courts, with games abandoned as the water failed to slow.

With no improvement possible due to the continuous dripping of water from the leaking roof, the NDNA was faced with no choice but to cancel the remaining games for the rest of the day in the interests of player safety.

The committee has worked hard to reschedule these games to a later date.

Fortunately, the A1 clash between Wickepin 1 and Olympics Gold was able to be played out, with the game requiring a shorter half-time break and multiple time-outs to wipe the court to ensure a safe playing surface.

With Wickepin missing several key defensive players from their line-up due to injury, Olympics’ shooting combination of Claire Conlan and Helen Wyatt were accurate. It was hard going for defenders Asha Slawinski and Bella Budby Olympics established a two-goal lead midway through the first quarter.

Wickepin’s attack end was up to the task however, with some incredible accuracy from shooters Abbey Steere and Georgia Dawes that saw Wickepin pull back this early deficit and draw ahead by the first change.

Olympics coach Erin Streeton kept the rotations up through their defensive end with Harley Heywood, Aniela Reid, Ellen Smith and Catherine Thornton all trying their best to combat Steere and Dawes throughout the game.

Olympics didn’t shy away from the contest, with mid-courters Jo Annear and Tenisha Harper receiving good support from Sophie Hilder, injecting some good speed into transitions down the court and feeding into the goal circle.

In the final quarter, Steere was joined by her sister Tyler in the goal circle, with both siblings well-fed from their mother Kelly Steere from mid-court.

The sisters’ accurate shooting helped Wickepin extend their lead and take the win 59-39 at the final whistle.

Abbey Steere, Budby and Dawes were awarded best-player votes from Wickepin, with Wyatt receiving the nod for Olympics.
