Parents fury over Arbor Grove Primary School in Ellenbrook’s birthday sweets ban based partly on ‘cultural diversity’

Parents have slammed a Perth school for banning kids from bringing cupcakes to class on their birthday — partly in case they offend students from different cultures. In a letter to parents, Ellenbrook’s Arbor Grove Primary School principal Glen Purdy acknowledged that the decision might be unpopular. “Whilst teachers at Arbor Grove are happy to celebrate the birthdays of students in the classroom, we must do so in the most inclusive, practical and appropriate way,” he said. “Following concerns raised by members of our community, the school executive have reviewed the school’s position. “During our deliberations we have been mindful of the increasing number of students with food allergies and intolerances, the cultural diversity of the school and the beliefs and traditions of these cultures.” The ban on pupils bringing cakes, lolly bags and other unhealthy options on their birthday starts on Monday. Mr Purdy said students who came to school with any of the items would have them confiscated and returned to them at the end of the day. “I acknowledge this may not be a universally popular decision, however it does avoid the risk of a child suffering a potentially life threatening health issue if they ingest an item they are allergic to and is respectful to the cultural diversity within he school.” Parents have taken to Facebook to rail against the decision. “It’s not the birthday cake I am complaining about, it’s the fact we can’t celebrate a birthday for a child in school because now it offends their religion and ethnic ways, sorry that’s going too far,” one parent complained. Another said: “It’s a bit over the top that’s for sure. Perhaps they will get rid of the Easter hat parade and Christmas carols, too.” On radio this morning — after news of the ban made the front page of The West Australian — Mr Purdy doubled down on the move, emphasising the health reasons for the ban but saying the fact that some of the school’s students do not eat animal by-products was also a factor. “We do have a diverse culture of clientele and some of our families do not have animal by-products in their food offerings and we are considerate of that,” Mr Purdy told 6PR. “Arbor Grove has a strong history of looking after the welfare of the kids and putting them first and also for being as inclusive as we can. One of our core beliefs at the school is belonging.” Talkback caller Kristen said she was annoyed religion had been used to in part justify the birthday cake ban. “Why would you want to put a dampener on kids’ birthdays, it is the happiest time of year for them?” Education Minister Sue Ellery would not comment, instead referring the matter to the Education Department, which has not issued a response tonight. Other parents commented on the school’s P&C Facebook page expressing their fury. “Why would anyone be offended or upset about having cake? Presumably the whole class gets a slice. Even if you don't celebrate birthdays, you can benefit from someone else celebrating theirs, or just choose not to participate.” One mum was already mourning the loss of a sweet tradition. “It would be a very sad day when a child is not allowed to celebrate their birthday at school,” she wrote, while another railed: “Don’t even get me started... so it’s OK to sell soft drinks at a school disco for fundraising but not ok to bring a cupcake to school for a birthday.” Another mum said it was “a very poor decision to include cultural reasons into this.” “What about the kids who do celebrate birthdays?
