Brady Dermott Collins: Geraldton cricket star to be sentenced for hit and run on 18-year-old girlfriend

A local cricket star who ran over his 18-year-old girlfriend and fled the scene has had a sentencing date set for later in 2024 while a psychology report is prepared. Brady Dermott Collins, 26, appeared in Geraldton District Court on Wednesday, where a provisional sentencing date was set. According to police, Collins ran over the 18-year-old about 11pm on December 18, 2022, and sped away, leaving her with broken ribs, a broken jaw and a fractured shoulder and legs. He is accused of failing to report the incident to authorities. He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving in circumstances which subsequently occasioned grievous bodily harm and driver failed to stop and ensure assistance received after incident occasioning grievous bodily harm in March. Collins pleaded not guilty to being the driver involved in an incident occasioning death/grievous bodily harm failed to report incident to WA Police in September last year. The court was told more time was needed to obtain a psychology report before sentencing could proceed. A pre-sentence report detailing Collins’ background and plans for the future has been received. A provisional sentencing date was set for Friday, September 16. Police previously said Collins drove to a Utakarra address to drop off the woman’s handbag after the couple had an argument. The woman held on to the top of the driver’s side glass window and fell when Collins accelerated away. Police said she was run over and dragged under the car. She was flown to Perth by the Royal Flying Doctor Service and required specialist medical treatment. The court was previously told it could take the woman six months to walk again. Collins played cricket for Towns and was considered one of the league’s best, winning the 2021-22 Doug Hogue medal. The 26-year-old will next appear in the Geraldton District Court on Wednesday, July 31.
