Bureau of Meteorology records hottest August day in history at Geraldton Airport as wind picks up in spring

Geraldton recorded its hottest August day in history on the last day of winter, when the mercury hit 33.2C. Thursday’s maximum recorded at Geraldton Airport was the highest ever temperature recorded at the station in August, according to the Bureau of Meteorology, but the city can expect light showers and windy conditions over the next week. On Wednesday, Geraldton was hit with a 32C high, matching the previous record high recorded on August 28, 2019. The average daily temperature during August is 21C. A BOM spokesperson said the warm end to winter was due to a unique weather pattern and was quite an unusual event. “We had a trough that was offshore from the west coast yesterday, which is a typical summer type weather pattern,” he said. “Winds as a result of the trough blows warmer air from the north and central parts of the state.” The spokesperson said mean maximum temperatures were above average for most of the state in winter. Looking into spring, the BOM spokesperson said there were about five fronts moving across the state over the next week, creating a windy beginning to the season. He said the fronts may bring some rain to Geraldton. “It’s going to bring showers when the fronts move through, Geraldton will be on the top end of those fronts so there will be windy conditions,” he said.
