Carnarvon, Meekatharra and Geraldton airports flying high after receiving State grants

Three airports in the Mid West-Gascoyne region will receive funding to revitalise their tarmacs and improve security in the latest round of regional grants. Meekatharra, Carnarvon and Geraldton were three of 17 regional WA locations to receive grants from the Department of Transport’s Regional Airports Development Scheme (RADS). Meekatharra Aerodrome will receive $605,000 to re-seal the runway, taxiway and aprons, which will include a bitumen sand seal sweeping and sealing the turning area for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. A Department of Transport spokesperson said the total value of the works would be $1,296,500 and was essential in meeting the long-term operational requirements of the airport, which supports extensive community services, regular public transport and RFDS operations. Carnarvon Airport will receive $415,988 to help reconstruct the northern apron, which the department spokesperson said was “coming to the end of its useful life”. The tarmac supports Carnarvon’s essential health services, other regular services, provides access to several hangars, refuelling trucks and parking for aviation operators, which is crucial during emergencies such as floods or cyclones. The Carnarvon Airport was also awarded $23,000 to develop a $46,000 strategic asset renewal and development plan, which will help the shire identify capital works needed at the airport, and $4000 to help buy and install CCTV for the airport’s apron. The grants scheme has also provided $165,000 to refresh runway 14/32 at Geraldton Airport. The funding will ensure the strip can continue to host aircrafts to connect communities, improve safety and access to health services, expand business opportunities and capacity. The RADS provides financial assistance to regional airport owners for the renewal and upgrade of airport infrastructure to meet the transport needs of WA communities.
