City of Greater Geraldton approves speed limit changes in northern suburbs after community petition

Speed limits along a main road in Geraldton’s northern suburbs will become more consistent after the City of Greater Geraldton voted to approve recommended changes from Main Roads. It comes after residents Joan and David Coutts petitioned for the speed limit along Chapman Road from Sail Boulevard in Sunset Beach to Glenfield Beach Drive in Glenfield to be reduced from 90km/h to 70km/h in April. The petition received 57 signatures. After an assessment of the area, Main Roads determined multiple speed limit changes in Glenfield — including the one Mr and Mrs Coutts were campaigning for — which the council voted to approve on Tuesday. Changes include extending the 60km/h speed limit to Corallina Quays in Glenfield, a reduction from 90km/h to 80km/h between Sail Boulevard to Glenfield Beach Drive, and increasing the speed from 70km/h to 80km/h from Glenfield Beach Drive to North West Coastal Highway. Deputy mayor Natasha Colliver thanked Mrs Coutts for her advocacy and said it was a positive outcome addressing speed limits in the area and improving consistency. Ms Coutts agreed and hoped Glenfield residents were satisfied with the speed limit changes. “We are thankful that the consultation among Main Roads, police, and council has taken into account the residents’ concerns and reached a satisfactory resolution,” she said. Councillors were previously told WA Police and Main Roads did not support reducing the speed limit to 70km/h because there was a risk motorists would speed. The changes will be implemented as a matter of priority.
