City of Greater Geraldton reminds community to be alert for turtles on the move during breeding season

The community is being asked to take precautions as freshwater turtles are seen more frequently at rivers in the Geraldton area during breeding season. From September to November, the native dinner plate turtle and naturalised south-western snake-necked turtle are in search of nesting sites. Turtles have been seen at both Chapman and Greenough rivers and are vulnerable to vehicles and predators as they move away from wetlands. The City of Greater Geraldton asks the community to assist the turtles with their journey by keeping dogs on leashes around rivers and estuary areas and keeping an eye out for turtles on the move. If a turtle is on the road, the city asks that people do not to pick it up, but rather escort it while it crosses. Hatchling turtles can be moved to the nearest wetland, and if a turtle is being attacked people can help protect them from predators. Anyone who sees an injured turtle should contact the Wildlife Helpline on 9474 9055. Turtle sightings can be recorded using the TurtleSAT website or on the TurtleSAT app.
