Damon Hollings, 43, stable after serious assault in Geraldton CBD, doctors yet to rule out permanent injury

A 43-year-old who was allegedly one-punched by an international traveller is in a stable condition in hospital, but it is too early for doctors to know if he has permanent brain damage. Damon Hollings from Sunset Beach was fighting for life at Royal Perth Hospital last week after he was allegedly assaulted on Durlacher Street on Wednesday, September 25 just after 10pm. European traveller Fred Martin Magi, 27, was charged over the alleged attack, which left Mr Hollings with serious head injuries after he was knocked unconscious and fell on to the pavement. The two men, who police say are not known to each other, were both at the Freemasons Hotel earlier in the night. Mr Hollings was flown to Perth for serious bleeding on the brain the following morning and remained in a critical but stable condition for days. On Monday, an East Metropolitan Health Service spokesperson confirmed Mr Hollings was stable but doctors had not ruled out the possibility of permanent disability. His recovery time is unknown but it is understood he will receive rehabilitation at the neurology clinic. The morning after the incident, police found and arrested Mr Magi travelling on Brand Highway in Badgingarra. He was charged with grievous bodily harm and did not enter pleas during his court appearance on Friday last week. He was granted bail on conditions he surrenders his passport, resides at an address in Canning and reports to the police station twice a week. Mr Magi is currently in Australia on a working holiday visa. He will reappear in Geraldton Magistrates Court on Thursday, November 7.
