David James Fleay, 42, pleads guilty to crashing into bollard outside Geraldton police station wearing helmet

The man who wore a crash helmet as he ploughed into a bollard at the Geraldton police station will remain in custody until he is sentenced later this year. David James Fleay, 42, appeared in Geraldton Magistrates Court from custody on Thursday and pleaded guilty to endangering life, health or safety of a person and criminal damage or destruction of property. The court was previously told Fleay drove a Holden Astra into a bollard at the Geraldton police station about 4.30am on Sunday, February 4. He was wearing a crash helmet. CCTV footage previously played to the court showed Fleay exiting the vehicle after impact and shadow boxing before officers inside the building arrested him. The bollard stopped the vehicle from smashing into the building’s glass windows. Defence counsel Albert Kunneke requested a presentence report and a psychological report after concerns were raised about Fleay’s mental health and post-traumatic stress disorder, developed from childhood trauma. The court had previously received a report noting the incident was influenced by drug use. Fleay will be sentenced in the Geraldton Magistrates Court on Monday, May 6. He was remanded in custody.
