Fundraiser quiz night at Towns Football Club raises $6000 for cancer research ahead of 200km Perkins ride

Mother, volunteer and advocate for change Fiona Galvin continues to do good in the Geraldton community, this time by taking on her ninth MACA Cancer 200 Ride for the Perkins later next month. The ride to beat cancer is around the corner, as almost 2000 riders gear up to peddle 200km over two days, raising critical funds for cancer research in WA. Ms Galvin is a first aid trainer for St John WA, as well as a volunteer for the ambulance service. She began taking part in the MACA Cancer 200 ride eight years ago, and this year she will ride the 200km with her two daughters, Sasha and Brittany, as well as fellow paramedic Gianna Leone. “One of my very close friends had breast cancer at the time, and she’s still fighting breast cancer, and I just committed. I thought it was a really good thing to do, to be able to raise money for cancer research,” she said. “I will do the ride as long as I can.” On the weekend of October 12-13, the group will ride the 200km round trip from Optus Stadium to Mandurah, making their way down via an inland route before travelling back up along the coast. Her daughter, Brittany, works in oncology and knows firsthand how cancer can affect anyone and the emotional and physical toll it has on families. This will be her second year riding for the cause and Sasha’s first time getting involved. Last weekend, Ms Galvin hosted a quiz night fundraiser at Towns Football Club, where more than 170 people participated and helped raise $6000 for the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research. The table of Geraldton Buccaneers players and friends won the trivia, taking home a box of wine, chocolates and scratchies donated by Mortgage Choice Geraldton, while Ian Burrow won the best-dressed individual.
