Geraldton roller derby sign-up next week at Rocks Laneway, skaters of all ages encouraged to join

Geraldton roller derby team, Sin City Rollers, wants “fresh meat” at its recruitment drive next week. So if you’re keen to have a go at one of the only sports without a ball, put your blades on and roll down to Rocks Laneway next Wednesday. People of all sizes and aged over 18 are welcome to try out. The Sin City Rollers have announced their 10-12-week skating course for 2022, with the team of fun-loving girls asking for local skaters to make the post-COVID season the best one yet. Last Wednesday, about eight women showed up to the first meeting of the season eager to put the work in with smiles and laughs all around. The skating program encourages the skills required to skate with confidence, keep fit and join other keen rollerskaters around Geraldton. Geraldton Roller Derby trainer Roxanne Grant, aka Rocket, said the group focused on training in small range to build resilience and skill for the circuit. “It’s not like netball or soccer, the girls bond on a huge, multicultural level and we’re all equal. We urge everyone to come along,” she said. “We need adult female skaters and male and female referees.” Member of Geraldton Roller Derby Grayce Hyland (Dizgrayce), 18, said the sport helped her fitness and make new friendships. “Not only does it benefit your body mass, you learn a new skill and you don’t get a speeding ticket for going as fast as you can,” she said. “It makes you a better person and you make some really great friends.”. The recruitment drive starts on April 6 at Rocks Laneway at 5.30pm. There will be equipment available to loan to newcomers.
