Live track: Paralympian Jeremy McClure’s open water swim goes live from Abrolhos Islands to Geraldton shore

Blind Paralympian Jeremy McClure has succeeded in his second attempt of a record swim between the Abrolhos Islands and Geraldton. Attempting a feat no other swimmer has achieved before, McClure left from around Gregory Island about 10am on Friday. He made it to Pages Beach around 10.30am on Saturday, bringing an end to 24 hours and 20 minutes in the water. In a Facebook post, his team said McClure was “greeted by a big crowd” and is “currently recovering in hospital just to check he’s OK, but the doctors are not concerned about anything ... he’s in great spirits, just a bit sore”. The original attempt from Hummock Island was a 55km swim to Geraldton’s shore. According to the GPS, he must swim another 50km before he makes it to shore in Geraldton. The swim is expected to take more than 24 hours. Earlier this week, McClure said he expected to complete the distance before 12pm on Saturday and arrive at Geraldton’s Town Beach. McClure swam for 16 hours on his first attempt in June, but abandoned the task when his crew became unwell because of fatigue and strong currents pulling the swimmers south. “We’ve made a few tweaks for safety, visibility and making sure the communication is better,” he said. “The team is very strong, we’ve learnt a hell of a lot from the last one.
