A 27-year-old man has been charged after allegedly threatening an off-duty police officer with a knife.

Geraldton police said the incident occurred about 1pm on Saturday when the man was allegedly acting aggressively towards a woman in a parked car in Sunset Beach.

An off-duty police officer parked next to the vehicle in front of a shop on Chapman Road where he witnessed the man acting erratically.

The officer attempted to assist the situation when the man allegedly threatened the officer with a knife.

A WA Police spokeswoman said the man was in possession of a hammer and Stanley knife.

The officer gave chase to the man who fled on foot.

He was then arrested at a Spalding property later that day.

He was charged with four counts of breaching a violence restraining order, being armed in public in a way that may cause fear and disorderly conduct.

He appeared via video link in Perth Magistrate’s Court today.
