Perth man charged with pointing firearm at students while culling kangaroos in Morawa

A man has been charged with pointing a firearm at two students at a Mid West college while allegedly culling kangaroos on Department of Education land in August. Morawa police allege about 7pm on August 10, a 26-year-old man was a passenger in a vehicle when he pointed a firearm at two high school students. The firearm was not discharged, police say. Officer-in-charge Sgt Nathan Smith said a school bus was being refuelled to collect star pickets from a shed to play recreational football at the time of the alleged incident. He said the students were supervised by an adult. Police are looking at if the college has an internal policy allowing the legal culling of kangaroos on Department farmland, but that is yet to be confirmed. “Previously the ag college has used licensed shooters to cull kangaroos,” Sgt Smith said. The 26-year-old man from Banksia Grove has been charged with two counts of unlawfully pointing a firearm at any person. He will face Three Springs Magistrates Court on September 18. The Department of Education professional standards and conduct executive director Mary Brown said the Department was aware of the incident and the students were being supported. “We are aware of an incident that occurred on the college grounds on a weekend which is now a WA Police matter,” she said. “As this is currently before the court I am unable to make any further comment. “Support has been provided to students affected and is available for as long as it is needed.”
