Ramblers are first ever Nor-West Cup champions as Carnarvon side win inaugural footy preseason competition
Carnarvon Ramblers have made history, becoming the Gascoyne Football Association’s first ever Nor-West Cup champions.
They beat Carnarvon Warriors 11.5 (71) to 4.1 (25) in the preseason carnival’s final on Sunday to win the trophy and $5000.
The GFA said the carnival was a “fantastic weekend filled with plenty of football and good times”.
“The association would like to thank everyone involved in the inaugural Nor-West Cup Pre-Season Carnival held on Friday and Saturday,” it said.
Kim Schofield, from Brigades in the GNFL, was best-on-ground in the final, playing for Ramblers.
He was one of a group of players who travelled from Mullewa, Brigades, Northampton and Port Hedland to play.
Ramblers’ Jake Laycock won the 100m sprint and $500.
He was also best and fairest throughout the carnival.
The association’s Tessa Daly was looking forward to the competition becoming a regular fixture.
“It went really well,” she said.
“We are looking forward to it being an annual event and we have already had teams express an interest in next year.
“Hopefully it will be even bigger and better.”
She said Warriors were playing their first game since 2019.
The side had amalgamated with Boomers for the last few seasons due to lack of numbers but had re-formed as a standalone team.
The association will meet this week to sort out details for the season.
The region has had a lack of development in football.
But there has been progress lately.
The association has begun women’s games and the aim is to expand them into a full competition.
Exmouth local Mim Strom has been turning out regularly for the Fremantle Dockers in the AFLW as the team’s starting ruck and drawn praise for her tenacity in the role.
Ramblers won the league in 2021.
Warriors won the colts premiership.
In a sign of the talent developing in the region, the colts grand final featured eight girls, including best-afield Taneesha Finch, who has experience playing for South Fremantle in the Rogers Cup.
