Stargaze in Greenough adds to Astrotourism WA Eclipse Discovery Tour as part of Exmouth’s total solar eclipse

A free stargazing event will be held in Greenough, regarded as a first class dark sky tourism destination, as part of the Astrotourism WA Eclipse Discovery Tour next month. A series of stargazing events known as the Eclipse Discovery Tour will be held around WA as part of the Ningaloo Total Solar Eclipse in Exmouth on Thursday, April 20. The free stargaze will be held at the Central Greenough Settlement on Friday, April 14, from 5pm-9pm, and hundreds of guests are expected to pull up a chair and gaze at the night sky. Attendees will be able to enjoy live music, cultural performances, a smoking ceremony and educational presentations all while taking in the stars, clusters and constellations. Guests are urged to bring their own telescopes or binoculars, as well use telescopes available on the night, and bring chairs, torches, warm clothes and insect repellent. A free shuttle bus service will leave the QEII centre at 4.30pm, returning at 9pm; registration is required. City of Greater Geraldton mayor Shane Van Styn said the city was happy to be part of the Eclipse Discovery Tour and he hoped the community would show their interest to keep astrotourism events being held in the area. “This event will showcase just how lucky we are to live in the Midwest, with dark skies making for a perfect backdrop to showcase the phenomenal celestial bodies above us,” he said. “Not only will viewing through telescopes be an absolute treat, but eventgoers will also enjoy a welcome to country, Aboriginal dance, live music from Alexia Parenzee and an Eclipse Discovery Tour presentation.” The event is supported by Astrotourism WA and 18 regional local governments, including the city.
