Tonnes of hot cross buns devoured in the Mid West in the lead-up to Easter

Forget the saying selling like hot cakes, it should be replaced with selling like hot cross buns, as new data from supermarket giant Coles reveals 3.7 tonnes of the Easter treats have been devoured in the Mid West. With Easter just around the corner, Coles released its annual hot cross bun data and it shows the Mid West is a hungry bunch. Shoppers in the Mid West have purchased a total of 74,028 hot cross buns since Boxing Day in the lead-up to Easter, or the equivalent of 3.7 tonnes. The top-ranked buns by flavor were traditional fruit followed by chocolate and apple and cinnamon. A trio of Geraldton children taste-tested Coles’ hot cross buns last week and the verdict was all positive. Alani Wallace-Moore, 9, said she liked to eat plain hot cross buns. Her favourite thing about Easter was getting to “eat chocolate for breakfast and all day”. Aubrey Carter, 3, and her big sister Ally, 8, both liked chocolate hot cross buns the best and their favourite Easter activity was finding chocolate during their Easter egg hunt with their pink and blue baskets. Coles Geraldton is ranked 22 out of 96 stores around WA by number of buns purchased. The supermarket plans to sell 10 million more hot cross buns across Australia before Easter on top of the 55 million already sold.
