First Nations stories told by two hundred drones in light and sound show across Geraldton sky

A light and sound show using 200 drones is taking flight to Geraldton next month to tell local First Nations stories through the medium of light. The show, named First Lights — Winthu Wangga, was created by local Wajarri, Badimaya, and Wilunyu woman Dr Charmaine Papertalk-Green in collaboration with artist Nicole Dickerson. Ms Dickerson specialises in drone light visuals and was assisted by animator Jarrad Russell to help craft a story that honours people and culture. Presented to coincide with wider NAIDOC week celebrations, First Lights — Winthu Wangga will share ancient knowledge and the first stories specific to the region. Dr Papertalk-Green said the shows paid tribute to old people and places and emphasised the importance of handing down culture through stories, dance, song, and the arts. Commissioned by the Fremantle Biennale, the large-scale contemporary art form is choreographed with 200 drones and powerful LED lights through specialist 3-D animation. “First Lights creates a meaningful opportunity to centre local stories within a major contemporary art event,” co-founder and artistic director of the Fremantle Biennale, Tom Mùller, said. “The narratives connect to significant events in each region, sharing little-known knowledge, stories, and histories that aim to inspire celebration and unite the community.” With the ability to create more than four billion colour combinations, the technology used to deliver the light shows has a greater range of effects than fireworks. The show is also recognised for having a light ecological footprint in comparison with a traditional fireworks show. Each show is accompanied by a cinematic soundscape to create an immersive experience, free and accessible to all. The show will be presented at Geraldton Foreshore on Saturday, July 13, with a range of community activities on offer from 4.30pm and the drone show beginning at 7pm.
