Weather warning for Geraldton predicts damaging winds and heavy rain with longer than usual cold front

Powerful cold fronts along the south coast will cause damaging winds, heavy rainfall and dangerous surf conditions in Geraldton until late Wednesday. Bureau of Meteorology warn the cold front is expected to be stronger and longer lasting than normal, and is considered a “once-in-a-year” weather event. Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Jessica Lingard said broadly speaking the forecast predicted an accumulated total of 50-100mm of rain along WA’s coastal areas within the next three days. “We have three cold fronts in a row, the sum total will mean we could see heavier rainfalls,” she said. “There are predictions of rainfall that could lead to flash flooding — an estimated 30m within an hour.” Predictions for Monday in Geraldton are chances of a thunderstorm in the afternoon with damaging winds northerly 35 to 50km/h tending north-westerly 45 to 55km/h in the morning, tending westerly 40 to 50 km/h in the late afternoon. Tuesday comes with a prediction of a very high chance of showers in the afternoon and evening with further damaging winds blowing westerly at 35 to 55km/h. The forecast for Wednesday is a very high chance of showers in the morning and afternoon with westerly wind 40 to 50 km/h increasing to 35 to 55 km/h early on, tending south-westerly 30 to 40 km/h in the evening. Rain is expected to ease late Wednesday to early Thursday morning with Geraldton expecting up to 8-20mm on Monday, 3-5mm Tuesday and 3-6mm on Wednesday.
