Woolworths joins eco-conscious businesses in Geraldton recycling batteries and mobile phones

Battery and mobile phone disposal has become a whole lot easier as Woolworths joined the ranks of eco-conscious businesses around Geraldton who provide recycling units at their stores. The City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn applauded Woolworths and their efforts to improve e-disposal options. “E-waste is one of the fastest growing waste streams in Australia, and the Mid West is no exception,” Mr Van Styn said. Woolworths reports an estimated 345 million batteries are used in Australia every year, but a staggering 94 per cent of those are not recycled. “It’s great to see more private enterprises getting on board with recycling efforts,” Mr Van Styn said. All batteries contain harmful substances that damage the environment when not disposed of correctly. The mayor encourages the community who may have old batteries or mobiles to take advantage of the accessible drop-off points. Woolworths battery and mobile phone recycling units are located at both Geraldton and Seacrest stores. Large electronic waste material can be disposed of at Meru Landfill. Woolworths are the latest supermarket chain to partner with Ecobatt and MobileMuster to provide e-recycling points around town. The City remains committed to ensuring all operations comply with a net carbon zero emissions plan by 2030.
