Severe thunderstorms are set to sweep across parts of WA in the next several hours.

At 5.22pm the Bureau of Meteorology alerted people in the southern interior to brace for heavy rain that could cause flash flooding.

“A very moist airmass is in place in the South Interior, with a low pressure system near Carnegie triggering thunderstorms along its eastern flank,” the alert reads.

“Some of these thunderstorms are capable of producing heavy rainfall.

“Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours.”

A second storm warning is in place for the Pilbara, with residents warned of damaging winds that are forecast to barrel through the area.

“A moist and unstable environment is triggering thunderstorms this afternoon. These have become severe with damaging wind gusts through central parts of the Pilbara,” the BOM alert issued at 4.56pm stated.

“Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Marble Bar.”

Emergency WA advises anyone in the effected areas to secure outdoor furniture, prepare an emergency kit and review their safety plan.
