The Donnybrook community gathered on Saturday morning for Anzac Day services to pay their respects to all of the men and women who have served in times of conflict and peace.

On Anzac Day, hundreds of people gathered at the Donnybrook Memorial Wall to commemorate the 111th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings.

In the early hours of the morning, people gathered in the dark for the annual dawn service, a time Donnybrook RSL president Dan Armstrong said brought the community together to honour the courage, sacrifice and spirit of those who served and gave their lives.

“On this day, we reflect not on the battles fought, but on the enduring values, mateship, resilience and selflessness,” he said.

Mr Armstrong said Anzac Day honoured ordinary people who faced extraordinary circumstances and shaped the course of history.

“Their legacy is not only written in the past but lives on in the freedoms we enjoy today,” he said.

“Let us remember their bravery, their suffering and their unwavering commitment to something greater than themselves.

“May we carry their spirit forward, living with kindness, standing with courage and striving for peace.

“We will be forever grateful to all the brave men and women who marched off to war without a second thought for their own well being. “

A gunfire breakfast at the Soldiers Memorial Hall was held after the service, before the annual march from Ayers Garden to the Donnybrook Memorial Wall set off for the following Anzac Day commemorations.

This year’s guest speaker was Dannielle Nelson who spoke about her grandfather who enlisted during World War II, while students from St Mary’s Catholic Primary School formed the guard of honour for community members and group representatives to lay their wreaths.
