Increase in women mountain bikers seen across the State with a program for beginners coming to Collie

More women are taking up the adventure of mountain biking than ever before and the benefits experienced by new bikers are multi-dimensional. Women on Wheels Mountain Biking program coordinator and enthusiast Emily Brett said she loved it because of mental and physical benefits. These included making friends and keeping fit while having fun — something she hopes to bring to Collie locals later this month with a weekly program. “I was feeling that my stamina had increased along with the confidence in myself and the social connections I made was very valuable to me,” Ms Brett said. “People are seeing all of the benefits that come with it, the socialising aspect, spending time with family and getting active. “It is just a different type of getting active. Rather than going to gym, this is something really fun and you make lasting friendships through these experiences too.” Despite the sport typically being male dominated, women now more than ever were changing the sport’s landscape. WestCycle chief executive officer Wayne Bradshaw said the majority of women participating were engaging in mountain biking recreationally. “While there is a growing number of women entering competitive mountain biking and gravel events, the majority are engaging recreationally,” he said. “For many, it’s about the experience — being outdoors, challenging themselves, and enjoying the camaraderie of riding with others. “That said, we’re seeing more women transition from recreational riding into local races and other events, which is fantastic for the sport’s diversity and depth.” Mr Bradshaw said the growth of the sport was driven by a range of factors like “greater visibility of women in the sport, more inclusive events, and a strong push from community groups and local councils to make trails more accessible”. The Women on Wheels Mountain Bike Program is a four-week program organised by WestCycle and delivered by Huck it Coaching, designed to give women with no prior experience access to mountain biking in a safe, supportive environment. The team is bringing their knowledge to the South West with weekly rides at Collie MTB trails on every Saturday from August 16 to September 6.
