A frantic manhunt is underway after a man escaped police custody on Sunday.

Jaiden Miller was at Barkly Work Camp in Tennant Creek when he went missing around 5.20pm.

NT Police said the 28-year-old is believed to have removed his electronic monitoring device and escaped the prison camp.

They said he might be travelling towards Alice Springs, which is about five hours away.

Police are desperately trying to find the man and are urging him to hand himself in.

It is not clear what Mr Miller was in prison for.

Members of the public are urged not to approach Mr Miller if they spot the prisoner.
