The Mitchell Freeway southbound has reopened before the Northbridge tunnel but major peak-hour delays remain following a police incident this morning.

The southbound lanes of the freeway after Vincent Street were closed as a result of the incident, which occurred on Graham Farmer Freeway about 5.35am on Tuesday.

Main Roads said the eastbound entry to the tunnel and the Mitchell Freeway after Vincent Street had reopened, but that traffic remains heavy.

The area is congested and drivers are urged to seek another route.

Police said there was no risk to the public following the incident, which appears to be mental health-related.
