A car has caught fire causing commuter chaos in peak hour traffic this morning.

Shocking footage supplied to The West Australian shows a Mercedes SUV engulfed in flames along Erindale Road and Northbeach Road in Gwelup about 8.05am.

The car, which was stopped in the middle of the road, blew thick black smoke throughout the area.

The heat of the flames caused the windscreen and front windows to shatter.

In the video, flames can be seen erupting from the vehicle and one motorist who drove past said she could feel the intensity of the blaze.

The Fire and Emergence Services Department said firefighters were quickly on the scene.

All occupants of the car made it out of the vehicle with no injuries.

Police are still at the scene directing traffic.

Traffic is heavy in the area and motorists are being warned to drive with caution.
