Commuters hoping to start their weekends early are facing standstill traffic on a major Perth thoroughfare following a crash.

The collision involving two vehicles has resulted in the centre lane of Mitchell Freeway southbound before Warwick Road in Greenwood being shut to motorists.

Main Roads reported the incident shortly before 9.50am on Friday.

Traffic is extremely heavy along the road, with a witness commuting through the area telling PerthNow cars remain at a “stand still”.

Motorists remain outside their vehicles.

Drivers are urged to exercise caution and allow for a safe merge.
