A 16-year-old Geraldton girl who was allegedly found driving a stolen vehicle with false plates could also face drug charges after testing positive for methamphetamine, police say.

Dongara police stopped a Volkswagen Golf at 11.20am on Assen St, Karloo, on Monday after a check revealed the registration did not match the vehicle.

The girl was the sole occupant and allegedly tested positive for methamphetamine after a roadside oral fluid test.

She was taken to Geraldton Police Station where a further test allegedly confirmed a positive result.

Police later located the Volkswagen's owner, who confirmed the car had been stolen.

Police say the licence plates had been swapped with a separate vehicle without the owner’s knowledge.

The girl has been charged with stealing a motor vehicle and driving without a licence.

Police say a further drug driving charge is pending official oral fluid test results.
