New Buccs guard looks to impose himself

The S & K Electrical Geraldton Buccaneers have unveiled 193cm combo guard Matthew Adekponya as their latest off-season signing.

The Cairns product comes with a strong basketball pedigree, having previously played in the US college system, Europe and the NBL.

His most recent stint in Norway saw Adekponya average 29.9 points, 9.6 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game, while he was also previously named season MVP and defensive player of the year during his three years with Queensland Basketball League side the Mackay Meteors.

The imposing journeyman said playing in so many different leagues with varying styles would hold him in good stead for the upcoming season and allow him to quickly adjust to life in Geraldton.

“Before I went to Europe (I was) playing with an NBL team with a really methodical coach and he had his systems and liked it run his way. When you learn that way first it’s easier to mix it up afterwards,” he said.

“From what I’ve heard from the captain (Mat Wundenberg) the program likes to run and get after it so I should fit in fine.

“I just want to win. I won (a QBL title) last year so I just want to keep winning.”

Buccs general manager Andrew Horstman said the club was excited about the upcoming season and described Adekponya as the ultimate professional.

“Matt had generated a bit of interest from other SBL clubs so it was great to secure his services, ” he said.

“I had contact with his former coach and (general manager) which, to get a recommendation from him, definitely gave us a lot of comfort and pretty much sealed the deal for us.

“Come Monday hopefully we’ll have our full squad and we can build, and obviously we’re striving for that ultimate success, which is a premiership.”

Last year’s leading point scorer Benny Lewis will not be returning after deciding to explore his options in Melbourne.

However, it appears Adekponya will be a more than handy replacement for the sometimes streaky Lewis, no matter where he ends up playing.

“Every coach that I’ve had has played me somewhere different,” the 25-year-old said.

“It comes down to the coach and where he thinks I’m the most effective — it’s fine with me.”

Adekponya will attend his first full training session tomorrow where he will be introduced to his new teammates and coach Aaron Trahair.

Other new recruit Mo Barrow and fellow import Carter Cook are expected to arrive in Geraldton on Saturday night.

The Buccs’ season tips off on Saturday, March 19.
