Perth drivers welcome slight drop in fuel price as servo sells unleaded for month-low 188.3 cents
Perth drivers have flocked from all parts of the city to get the cheapest fuel in a month, with one service station selling at less than 190 cents per litre.
While ordinarily a high price, drivers were thankful to fill up with comparatively cheaper unleaded fuel at 188.3 cents per litre at Burk Cannington on Saturday.
The cheapest fuel in a month was made possible by the cutting of the fuel excise and GST taken by States combined with slightly lower global oil prices.
The Sunday Times spoke to motorists from far and wide who pulled into the station.
Michelle Hobbs, a museum curator from Lesmerdie said the price drop was a welcome relief to her bank balance.
“I saw it yesterday but I was at the wrong spot on the traffic lights to get over here so I was hoping it’d be the same,” she said.
“We went out for breakfast this morning and (thought) I’ll swing by while we’re down here, because we live near Kalamunda, and there’s nowhere this cheap up there.”
Portuguese national Julie Santos, 29, who is in Perth on a working holiday visa, said it was the first time she’d seen sub-$2 fuel since arriving in the country.
“I arrived in March, and at the time it was already above two dollars, so that’s the cheapest I’ve seen in the month I’m here,” she said.
“Honestly, I’m really happy ... I’m from Europe and in Europe it’s around six to seven dollars equivalent to Australia now - it’s super expensive there.”
Ms Santos works as a traffic controller which often requires her to drive long distances.
Any drop in fuel prices was a relief given her tight budget.
“I just started working, I came here with a low budget so of course this fuel (price drop), is super important for me,” she said.
“Sometimes I have 100km to do for work each day, back and forth, so I spend a lot on fuel each week.”
Close to 30 service stations in the metro region had fuel at under $2 a litre, while the average price of unleaded sat at 216.5c.
The last time fuel was as cheap in Perth was March 11, when Costco Airport and Casuarina offered fuel for 184.7 cents a litre and Burk Cannington at 187.3.
Geologist Kifayat Hussain said he’d been driving less and less as prices increased.
The 45-year-old said he’d come especially to top up his car.
“It’s definitely a welcome relief, it’s much cheaper right now. I actually had more than half a tank, but just pulled over just in case, because this isn’t gonna last probably,” he said.
“Hopefully the Middle East comes to a calm and fuel prices will come back to normal.”
Diesel was also being sold at Burk Cannington for under $3 a litre.
Cameron Brewer, 31, said it had been awhile since he’d seen prices this low.
“I know last time we fuelled up, it was $200 for half a tank, which is twice as much we’ve been paying,” he said.
“Really, it’s nice, it’s convenient today.”
Mr Brewer said that he and his wife had reorganised their travel arrangements to save money.
“I’m no longer driving this (diesel car),” he said.
“My wife is only 10 minutes from home, so she’s driving this to work now, and I’m 45 minutes, I’m driving the petrol car.”
Across Perth the average price of diesel was 315.9c, a six cent drop from the day prior.
Perth motorists are in for further relief on Sunday with another small decrease across all fuel types.
Unleaded fuel will drop by 1.6 cents to an average of 214.9 cents per litre while diesel will drop one cent to 314.9 cents.
The cheapest fuel in the city will once again be Burk Cannington at 188.3 cents per litre.
