Police investigating after man in 40s found severely injured on Durlacher Street in Geraldton

Geraldton’s CBD remained closed to the public on Thursday morning while detectives investigated an incident after a man was found lying on a street with severe injuries. The man, aged in his 40s, was discovered by police lying on the footpath on Durlacher Street about 10.15pm on Wednesday. Paramedics rushed the man to Geraldton Regional Hospital and he was airlifted by Royal Flying Doctor Service to Royal Perth Hospital about 7am on Thursday. An East Metropolitan Health Service spokesperson confirmed the man was in a critical but stable condition on Thursday. It is understood the man in his 40s was involved in an altercation between two small groups and received a significant head injury. Locals were met with police tape as sections of Marine Terrace and Durlacher Street closed to the public on Thursday morning, forcing businesses to remain closed. Forensic detectives examined the scene about 9am, photographing the outdoor drinking area of the Freemasons Hotel, along Durlacher Street and Marine Terrace. Freemasons Hotel owner Kieran Brain said the pub was hosting Chase the Ace earlier in the night before calling last drinks at about 9.30pm. He understands the victim attended the hotel after it had closed for the night. “I think they arrived about 9.30pm to 10pm, we were closed so they were turned away and that was the end of that,” he said. Mr Brian said hotel staff living on the balcony were unable to leave the building during the investigation. “As I understand it, everyone who is in there has to stay in there,” he said. Rialo and Lloyd business owner Matteo Rialo said he was concerned and frustrated he was not notified about the incident, estimating a loss of about $4000. “I have clients that are travelling out of town that I can’t get hold of because all their details are in the books. I will potentially lose clientele, I have a wedding on today,” he said. “I understand the situation’s not the best, whatever’s going on, but I think when it comes to business owners on the street, we need to be notified so we can make other arrangements. “I have to deal with angry clients and I still have to pay wages.” Motorists are being told to avoid the area.
