Perth weather: City wakes to coldest summer morning in 124 years

It might be summer, but Perth residents found themselves reaching for the winter woolies this morning as the city shivered through its coldest summer morning in 124 years.

Despite the sun shining as the city woke up to its very first day of summer, temperatures dropped to a record-breaking 6.6C at 5:25am today. It beats the previous record of 7.9C on December 7 in 2007.

It is also less than half Perth’s average minimum temperature at this time of the year, which is 16C, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

The average maximum temperature for December is 29.3C and the average rainfall is 10.6mm.

Temperatures are expected to climb to 24C today. The clouds are expected to disappear tomorrow making for some welcome clear skies and sunny days mid-week.

The chilly start to December follows the city’s wettest November on record and its coolest in 12 years.

About 92mm of rain fell on the metro area last month, four times the average for November.

The mean maximum temperature for the city was 24.7C last month, well below the November average of 26.8C.
