Winter Solstice: Perth cops a soaking on the shortest day of the year
It may be raining cats and dogs, but an end to the ruff weather isn’t far off — with clear skies on the horizon from Monday.
Australia’s shortest day of the year was marked by widespread downpours and a cold front, with Perth recording more than 7mm of rainfall on Saturday, and 47mm over a 24-hour period from 9am on Friday.
The State Emergency Service also received more than 36 requests for assistance from West Australians inundated with water across the State.
A similar soaking is expected on Sunday, partly cloudy with a high of 19C and a low of 10C, after which the city’s minimum temperatures are expected to drop.
“We had a cold front pass by followed by a bit of a rain band which caused those heavier falls (at the weekend),” Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Grace Abbott said.
“That cold pool is now moving off so in the new week we’ll have gradually clearing conditions — and that means our minimum temperatures will start dropping.
“But there’s definitely still showers expected tomorrow (Sunday) — between 1-5mm in Perth.”
Maximum temperatures over the next week aren’t expected to shift significantly, however, with highs still forecast to sit between 18 and 21 degrees.
