Emma Garlett: This Anzac Day let’s remember those who serve in the present as well as those from the past

This Friday is Anzac Day, a solemn day on which we honour those who have served. Each year, we pause to remember the past sacrifices made by men and women who wore the uniforms of our armed services. We think of those who gave their lives, and those who came back from war forever changed. This is important. Those large scale conflicts of the past were dramatic, world-shaping events. Without the brave actions of those Diggers and Allied fores, our lives today would likely be very different. Recent years have been difficult for the Australian Defence Force, with the royal commission into veteran suicide in particular exposing huge deficiencies in the ways in which our nation treats our servicemen and women. The ADF’s brass says they are determined to do things better. Time will tell if those efforts pays off. Our commitment to honouring Australia’s servicemen and women must not be confined to days of historical significance like Anzac Day and Remembrance Day. It needs to be a year round commitment, and one that continues after their service is complete. A few years ago, I wrote about the need to do more for First Nations people on ANZAC Day. Many Australians don’t know about the contribution made to our nation’s security by Indigenous Australians — even at a time at which they were not classed as Australians themselves. There has been progress in this regard. This year, Indigenous Australians will be recognised nationally at a service to recognise their contribution at the Australian War Memorial. Held after the Dawn Service, this will specifically commemorate the thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders who have served their country as far back as 1901. Here in Perth, Haka for Life will host a service at the Supreme Court Gardens at 11am to honour the contributions of both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Maori people, with a special Corroboree and Haka ceremony. These steps towards inclusivity for Indigenous veterans, after so many years of feeling shut out, are welcome. But we shouldn’t forget those who serve the country now. They deserve every ounce of respect we can give them, every bit of support to carry out their work and to readjust to civilian life once their service is complete. This is something that the US does well. They know how to show respect to their servicemen and women and offer them a range of benefits. So should Australia. As well as being the right thing to do, it will help us recruit, attract and retain military personnel in a time global security is becoming ever more uncertain.
