Perth Concert Hall redevelopment to cost an extra $23m for ‘seamless integration’ with surrounding area

Redeveloping the Perth Concert Hall will cost an additional $23 million than previously thought to ensure a future carpark can seamlessly integrate with the surrounding precinct. According to the State Government, the redevelopment to Perth’s flagship performance venue will now cost $173.3 million to build. The cost was previously estimated at $150 million. The project was first mooted in 2020 as part of the Perth City Deal, and the then McGowan Labor government committed $42m to the project. The State’s contribution now sits at $127.3m. Woodside is contributing a further $30m through the government’s Resources Community Investment Initiative — a scheme for the resource sector to fund “iconic infrastructure projects and community and social initiatives”. A further $16m will come from a mix of Federal Government and City of Perth funding. The spending increase was confirmed in the mid-year Budget review, released last week. The additional $23m budgeted for “Perth Concert Hall carpark interface” will be spent in the 2026-27 financial year. “The Government will invest a further $23m in 2026-27 on the Perth Concert Hall Redevelopment project to increase the project scope to include an interface with a future two-storey carpark, bringing the total project cost to $173 million,” the mid-year Budget review reads. According to a State Government spokesperson, the extra funds would go towards both “structural and mechanical services”. “The additional $23m in funding included in the mid-year review is to future proof the Perth Concert Hall to support seamless integration with the development of the wider precinct,” they said. “The term ‘interface’ refers to the elements that connect the Perth Concert Hall to the proposed carpark and includes structural and mechanical services.” The spokesperson said the redevelopment project — along with the proposed carpark — were on track to be complete by 2028, as planned. The Government announced last week that ADCO Constructions will build the project. The main works are set to begin in early 2026. Demolition works got underway in May. When complete, the Concert Hall will have new public internal spaces and foyers, along with new food and beverage outlets. It will also have upgraded backstage facilities and storage, new room for the West Australian Symphony Orchestra’s administration, rehearsal rooms, instrument storage and new auditorium seating. The northern forecourt will also be redeveloped and landscaped. The State Government spokesperson said the development would help boost Perth’s arts sector. “The Cook Government wants to foster a vibrant and creative economy and ensuring our arts infrastructure is modern and fit for purpose will do just that,” they said. “This investment of the Perth Concert Hall will ensure it thrives while supporting creative careers and growing WA’s creative industries.”
