Fremantle will enter their only bye of the season next weekend a game clear at the top of the AFL ladder, but the Dockers have pledged they will use their break for recovery rather than relaxation.
Coach Justin Longmuir is confident the maturity his players have shown this year will extend into their time away from the club, while injury-prone superstar Hayden Young said he will be just as diligent with his training in the coming days as he would be ahead of a game.
The Dockers continued a dream campaign by extending their club-record streak of consecutive victories out to 12 games and recording he greatest winning margin in their 31-year history with a 124-point thrashing of North Melbourne on Saturday.
After his side’s demolition of the Kangaroos at Bunbury’s Hands Oval, Young — who has been sidelined by a hamstring injury and concussion so far this season — told The West Australian he “won’t have too much time off over the bye”.
“I’ll just keep the body moving and stay ready,” Young said.
“Everyone’s got a program to do over the bye, mine might just be a bit more footy-related to get some more footy-specific movements, rather than just running in straight lines.
“I’ll speak to the (strength and conditioning staff) and the physios about that, but I’ve obviously missed a bit of footy load over the last month, so I’ll get that back up and feel good.”

After praising his side’s ruthlessness in their massive win over North Melbourne, Longmuir said he expected his players to keep the same attitude while they are away from the club.
“It’s not the end of the season,” Longmuir said.
“There’s an opportunity to go away and recover. We’re still in-season, the players understand that. We’ve got to come back and hit the ground running. We’ve got Geelong on a Thursday night, which means we’ve got a bit of a shorter break and shorter bye period.
“A big part of (our) motto is treating our players like men. They’ve been behaving like men and (I have) full faith they’ll go away, use this bye for the right reasons, and come back as hungry as ever.”
Throughout the season, Fremantle’s players, coaches and staff have remained wedded to a consistent message around taking their season one week at a time.
And Young stuck to the theme on Saturday, realising he did not know which team the Dockers would start the second half of their season against until he was midway through answering a question.
“That’s where my heads at. We’ll get to that next week,” he said.
“My focus is to get the bye right, make sure I recover, get some (kilometres) in the legs, feel good.”
