If Fremantle get their way, ‘Wharfie Time’ might be transferred from Optus Stadium to the MCG on the last day in September.
After the concept became a phenomenon for its seemingly-prominent role in the Dockers’ comeback win over Hawthorn earlier this year, The Agenda Setters panellist Caroline Wilson has revealed the Dockers have requested permission from the AFL to have the phrase flashed up on grand final day — if the Dockers qualify, and it is required.
“The AFL can’t give me an answer as to what they’re going to say,” Wilson said.
“Last year, Geelong was the top seed and they said ‘we want to play the (goal) songs’, and the AFL said yes. So then, Brisbane said ‘if you get it, we want Country Roads as well’.
Wilson’s co-panellist Luke Hodge questioned: “Will it have the same impact if you’re playing at the MCG, grand final day, and you’ve got 20,000 Fremantle supporters there, compared to 60,000?
“With 10 minutes to go, and Fremantle — apart from GWS and Gold Coast, the only club not to have won a flag, are you joking?” Wilson replied.
Fremantle have displayed Wharfie Time — a phrase made famous by former captain Matthew Pavlich in a pre-game huddle in 2009 — up on Optus Stadium’s big screens at the climaxes of close games in recent years.
But it captured the attention of the football world when its use was greeted with a massive cheer from a sellout crowd and a near-immediate goal from Jye Amiss which gave the Dockers a lead they did not surrender in a win over the Hawks in round nine.
Wilson also revealed the identity of the mystery Wharfie Time operator as the club’s chief executive Simon Garlick.
“He won’t admit it, I’ve quizzed him about it, he refuses to say it’s him — he is the man who has the link to the scoreboard (operator),” Wilson said.
