During the coronavirus crisis in June, Basketball Western Australia’s proposed 10-week West Coast Classic tournament seemed like a gargantuan effort, but as we approach a finals festival this weekend the tournament is already a success.

The Joondalup women dominated the regular season with depth and experience in their squad across all positions, they take on fourth-placed Rockingham.

The Warwick Senators women finished off their regular season with a bang, thrashing title contenders the Flames by 39 points to lock up second spot, behind the Wolves only on percentage.

The heavy blow sent the Perry Lakes Lady Hawks into third ahead of the Flames, setting up two mouthwatering fixtures to open Friday.

The Senators men have dominated the regular season and will take on Lakeside in Friday’s (1v4) match-up at Warwick Stadium.

While the Lightning were comfortably beaten by the minor champs two weeks ago captain Cody Ellis understands their opponents have the firepower to match his side, knocking down 26 threes last Saturday against Rockingham.

The former Illawarra Hawk and Sydney King told the West Australian that the side came into the WCC “wanting to win it all.”

WCC SEMI-FINAL DOUBLE HEADER: LIVE FROM 6:30 PM FRIDAY

“I feel like lots of people have downplayed the season, which is frustrating because a lot went into making it happen and it’s one of the few leagues occurring around the world.

“We came in wanting to win and along the way we’ve had some good games and had the opportunity to bring some young guys through, so it would be amazing to win it and it has been the goal since day one.”

Traditional rivals the Hawks and Wolves face off in the second men’s semi-final.

A single shot guaranteed Joondalup’s place in the post-season beating Willetton last Saturday by two points and preventing the Tigers’ finals campaign.
