Rockets booster: Stoinis keeps his cool in Hundred win
Marcus Stoinis has made swift amends after a tough opening match, keeping his cool to deliver with bat and ball and give the Trent Rockets lift-off to their Hundred campaign.
The Australian powerhouse allrounder sent down just one five-ball 'over' in the clash with Northern Superchargers at Trent Bridge on Sunday, but it was enough time for him to earn two wickets in successive balls, including the prize scalp of an on-song Harry Brook.
His 2-0 contribution proved crucial in keeping the Superchargers down to a sub-par total of 9-124 and was a far cry from Friday's opener when he had been hammered for a wicketless 34 runs off 20 balls as the Rockets misfired against the Birmingham Phoenix at Edgbaston.
With a few nerves jangling and nine runs still needed off the final 10 balls to get to the winning line, Stoinis (8no) and English batter Adam Hose (5no) then knocked off the runs between them to seal the Rockets' five-wicket win with four balls remaining.
Stoinis himself finished the job consummately, piercing the field with the winning cut to the boundary, earning himself some congratulations from the Rockets' star man Joe Root, who had kicked off the chase with 20 off 17 balls.
Root's England teammates Tom Banton (37 off 25) and Rehan Ahmed (31 off 26) were also key contributors in the pursuit.
The match's key moment had come earlier when Brook, who was again in magisterial form as he moved ominously to 45 off 29 deliveries, including two sixes and five fours, tried to muscle a slower one from Stoinis over deep square leg only to pick out Rehan on the boundary.
The next ball, the 35-year-old Stoinis also got Imad Wasim caught in the deep trying the same trick.
Earlier on Sunday at Southampton, Jofra Archer again showed he's getting back to his best, taking 2-16 to lead Southern Brave to set up a comfortable nine-wicket victory over Birmingham Phoenix.
With New Zealand spinner Michael Bracewell taking 3-10, Archer's effort helped the Brave limit the visitors to 7-106, Joe Clarke top-scoring with 36.
James Vince then hit 41 from 30 balls in a 75-run opening stand with Leus du Plooy (48no) to help ease them to a second win of the opening week.
