WA have crashed to a humbling One-Day Cup defeat to Tasmania at the WACA Ground, being thrashed by nine wickets in their second game of the new season.

For the second time in three days, a top-order batting collapse left WA in a spot of bother, but their tail-enders were not able to rescue them again as they were routed for 115.

And the Tigers wasted no time in the chase, tracking down their sub-par target inside the 17th over.

The result comes after WA were pinned firmly on the back foot by South Australia in their tournament opener on Friday night before the game was abandoned due to inclement weather.

Next month’s home clash with Queensland, which will come on the back of their first game of the Sheffield Shield season, now shapes as crucial for their hopes of staying in the race to qualify for the competition’s final.

After Tasmania side won the toss and chose to field, Riley Meredith was the chief destroyer in their impressive bowling effort.

The speedster collected 4-11 from his eight overs, receiving strong support from Test all-rounder Beau Webster (3-31 from 7.2 overs).

Veterans Cam Bancroft and Ashton Turner (both 19) tried to offer some resistance, but paid for attempts to move the game forward with their wickets as their side was bowled out in the 31st over.

Ultra-aggressive Tasmania opener Mitch Owen ensured his side had no wobble in their small chase, twice sending Mahli Beardman over the boundary inside the first 10 deliveries he faced.

Attempting one big shot too many sent him on his way for a brisk 43 from only 29 balls, but Webster (41 not out) promptly combined with Caleb Jewell (26 not out) to get the visitors home with a minimum of fuss.
