East Fremantle tall Josh Cripps to make long-awaited WAFL colts debut after recovering from serious knee injury

The East Fremantle meeting room erupted when colts coach Adrian Ricciardello broke the news on Thursday night. Popular tall Josh Cripps will make his long-awaited Sharks colts debut against Perth at Mineral Resources Park on Saturday after recovering from a serious knee injury. It will be the 18-year-old brother of Carlton skipper Patrick Cripps’ first match at any level since he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, one day shy of exactly a year ago, in a PSA footy match for Aquinas College. Ricciardello couldn’t be happier for the Northampton product and former Aquinas captain, detailing the work he had put in during his time on the sidelines. “It was a really special moment, not only for him but for us as a group as well,” Ricciardello said. “The amount of work he’s put in to get back out there, he’d be at training early then be one of the last to leave the track. “He would be working well past 7pm so just to break it to him and see the smile on his face and the boys get around him was a special moment. The room just erupted. “I have no doubt that he’s going to impact the group positively and we’re obviously not expecting too much from him in his first game back, we’ll keep it pretty simple for him and give him a role to play and build him up nicely.” The 199cm Cripps will start at full-forward and give first-round draft fancy Jack Williams a chop-out in the ruck when required. East Fremantle will also welcome back a pair of in-form midfielders, Corey Warner and Jake Urquhart, because of Aquinas’ bye. Warner is averaging 33 possessions, five tackles and 1.2 goals per game at PSA level, while Urquhart isn’t far behind with an average of 28 touches, six tackles and nearly a goal. Ricciardello felt silky-skilled talent Ed Curley’s State 19s inclusion was “reward for effort” after a noticeable lift in training standards since his move to Perth during the off-season. Curley was one of six Sharks to make the squad alongside captain Taj Woewodin, Warner, Williams, Josh Browne and Jed Hagan who is also part of the 17s program. “He’s come a mile from where he was this time last year and he’s only going to get better,” Ricciardello said. “I’m glad that he’s in the squad, it’s great to see him get some reward for his efforts.” Hagan and fellow midfielder Jack Cleaver are a couple of big outs, both featuring in WA’s under-17s carnival opener against South Australia in Adelaide on Sunday. Ruckman Kobe McMillan and ball winners Judd McVee, Sam Emery and Sam Collins have been promoted to the reserves. The Falcons will be without ball magnet Lochie Paton who has earned a promotion to the twos.
