Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir won’t do anything special or spend any time celebrating the club winning the minor premiership for just the second time, saying AFL isn’t a sport which recognises top spot as anything special.

The Dockers beat Adelaide by 24 points at Optus Stadium on Friday night to guarantee they will finish the home and away season on top of the ladder.

The only other time Fremantle have finished on top of the ladder was in 2015, but the club didn’t advance to the grand final.

Longmuir said everyone realises they are yet to achieve anything special, so celebrations will be kept on hold.

“You don’t get anything for a minor premiership. We don’t hang banners up like they do in the States for that sort of stuff. We’ve just put ourselves in a good position. Still plenty of work ahead,” he said.

“We’ve set our season up. That’s the way I look at it. It’s a good achievement. I’m really proud of the players for how they bounced back after last week. We’ve set our season up. We’ve put ourselves in a good position. That’s probably how we look at it.”

Longmuir was thrilled that his team played with added physicality. He said the way they tackled, applied pressure on the Crows and won contests was precisely how he wanted them to play.

He said those areas had been poor in some recent games but the players stepped up to show what they are truly capable of.

“Our physicality has been inconsistent, and our non-negotiable work rates been a little bit inconsistent. Our playing together has been a little bit inconsistent. We got back to doing that tonight,” he said.

“There’s playing for the team, and then there’s you know going when the team needs you to, which has been just just off marginally. We got back to that tonight,”
