Footy fans everywhere may have the last Saturday in September circled, but for the mums close to the game, the second Sunday of May is a pretty special one too.

Fremantle Dockers players have have the weekend free from training after their pulsating victory over Hawthorn on Thursday night, but they will be going all-out to celebrate the mums in their lives on Mother’s Day.

And this year is an extra exciting Mother’s Day for the Dockers, with the partners of stars Jordan Clark, Brennan Cox, Sam Switkowski and Corey Wagner all expecting babies.

Paige McCarthy, the partner of Clark, said this Mother’s Day was extra-special for her.

“This is my first Mother’s Day as a mum, which is really exciting. It’s a day to celebrate all the mums, step-mums and grandmas,” she said.

Keah Waters, who already has a young son Arlo with Cox, said she was excited to be a mum for the second time and had a relaxing day planned.

“We’re just going for brekkie for Mother’s Day and celebrating my mum as well,” she said.

Wagner, who hails from Queensland and has a young son Remy with partner Michaela, said the role partners and mothers played in the careers of AFL players was understated.

“I don’t really see my mum that often, so I try and get on the phone as much as I can to speak to her,” he said.

“It’s my wife’s second Mother’s Day, so it’s pretty special for her, and I’ll do some special things with her on Sunday, me and the little boy will take her out and really appreciate her.

“They sacrifice so much, especially in this industry, it’s a very selfish industry. The sacrifice they do, we’ve got to really appreciate it when the time comes.”
