Fremantle teen sensation Murphy Reid has shot into firm favouritism to claim this year’s Rising Star award ahead of his final chance to impress and become the fourth Docker to win the Ron Evans Medal.

It comes as his junior coach says the 19-year-old is only “just scratching the surface” of what is capable of at AFL level.

Reid is the now the $1.80 favourite to claim the illustrious award, ahead of Adelaide’s Dan Curtin ($3.75), while Brisbane midfielder Levi Ashcroft is next in the market at $4.50.

In a remarkable first season, Reid has played every game for the Dockers and averaged 14 touches, kicking 23 goals in 22 appearances.

Not only will he play a pivotal role in Fremantle’s must-win clash against the Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium on Sunday, he could also create history.

If Reid kicks two or more goals against the Dogs, he will become the first player to boot 25 majors and record 25 score assists in their debut year since Champion Data began recording score assists in 2003.

He has already amassed 34 score assists and 23 goals this season — the only other player with at least these stats this year is Brownlow medallist and Geelong captain Patrick Dangerfield (25 goals and 39 score assists).

Reid has already put his name into elite company this season, becoming just the seventh first-year player to record 20 goals and 20 score assists to join the likes of Hawthorn legend Cyril Rioli.

His 34 score assists this season is the fourth most from a player in their first 22 games – narrowly behind Rioli (36) Joel Selwood and Luke Breust (both 35).

Sandringham Dragons coach Rob Harding, who coached Reid at both State at national level, said Dockers fans should be excited about the young star.

“The beauty for Fremantle supporters is we are only just scratching the surface with Murphy,” Harding told The West Australian.

“He is genuinely a midfielder, and I can’t wait to see him go on ball with that group that Freo have got.

“What we are seeing as a half-forward and small forward now is just the beginning for him.”

After being taken with pick 17 in last year’s national draft, Reid has solidified himself in the Dockers’ best side as they push for a finals return.

Harding said the forward was “an absolute steal” for Fremantle.

“The fact that Murph fell to 17 surprised me a little bit, we got wind of that through the day that that might end up happening,” he said.

“I thought he was a top-five pick ... I’m sure Freo were just sweating on it hoping he dropped through”

Reid was a standout while representing Vic Metro throughout the 2024 carnival. The talented youngster averaged 25 touches and one goal a game to take out MVP honours for his side.

Harding said Reid couldn’t have done much more throughout his junior career.

“He’s a dual premiership player at the Dragons, he played the national championship with Vic Metro. He was the Vic Metro best and fairest in that group too so he couldn’t have done much more,” he said

“Every level he went to he just played exceptionally well and that’s translated to AFL footy for him.

“From when I first met him, as a bottom-ager, as a 17-year-old his talent was really evident.

“His teammates barely laid a hand on him in terms of tackling him, his evasiveness and ability to get out of the contest with ball in hand was first class. What we are seeing at AFL level is just an extension of what we saw at the Dragons.”
