James Aish: Versatile Fremantle Docker retires after 12 AFL seasons
Fremantle have farewelled another player with grand final experience, with James Aish pulling the pin after 12 AFL seasons.
After crossing from Collingwood at the end of 2019, Aish missed just eight games in his first five seasons at Fremantle, becoming a mainstay of the line-up and filling a variety of roles for Justin Longmuir.
But he was limited to just three AFL appearances this season, including two as the Dockers’ starting substitute, after falling out of favour.
Aish’s exit means three of the five oldest players on Fremantle’s list have departed this year, with the 29-year-old joining retiring greats Nat Fyfe and Michael Walters - the final two active Dockers from the club’s 2013 grand final - out the door.
The versatile Docker carved out a 186-game AFL career, which included a 2018 grand final role among 50 games at Collingwood following 32 appearances at Brisbane.
“It’s been a privilege to have played across three really good team in three states,” Aish said.
“It’s brought great challenges with moving, meeting new teammates and playing new positions, but it’s also been a blessing to meet great people along the way.
“When I look back on my career the real value has been bringing joy to my family, friends, fans and staff.”
Fremantle executive manager of football Joe Brierty hailed Aish’s versatility and respect among the playing group.
“His flexibility across a variety of roles - and calm head in any situation - made him a player our coaches trusted to play any role that the team needed,” he said.
“We thank Aishy for his contribution in more than 100 games at the club and know that he will always be part of the Freo family.”
Fremantle have been quick to make a string of list moves in the wake of last weekend’s elimination final exit.
The Dockers re-signed Neil Erasmus on a three-year extension after the midfielder closed out the season in encouraging fashion.
Depth duo Liam Reidy and Will Brodie are set to be on the move in next month’s trade period after requesting shifts to Carlton and Port Adelaide respectively, while uncapped duo Jack Delean and Odin Jones were both delisted.
The Dockers are set to re-sign wingman Jeremy Sharp to a two-year deal, while utility Oscar McDonald will play on in 2026. Both are likely to come off the rookie list.
