Feeling a million dollars after last weekend’s Golden Saddle, Sean and Jake Casey will chase more feature success at Saturday’s Ascot Opening Day.
The father-son training combination took Kalgoorlie’s seven-figure purse with Want A Winner and will take the covers off three-year-old stars Maria Lucia and He’s A Machino in the Listed $125,000 Max Simmonds Stakes (1000m).
Maria Lucia, a $7.50 chance, brilliantly won her first two starts before chasing home Aurum Belle and Afireofgidgeecoals at her next two starts.
Both of those horses are engaged against her this weekend, and the Casey’s filly has drawn poorly in barrier 12.
She will also carry a weight penalty having won the 2yo Magic Millions at just her second start. However, Jake Casey says the Rommel youngster is fit and ready.
“She’s much the same as she was and I’m very happy with her,” he said.
“The weight and the barrier are going to make it harder for her but she’s definitely in the right spot (with her fitness).
“On the way she went last prep, over the 1100 and 1200m, the Placid Ark looks her aim.”
The $500,000 Placid Ark Stakes (1200m) is run in a month’s time at Ascot during the Pinnacles carnival where Maria Lucia could also be joined by He’s A Machino ($9.50), who also has the job ahead from gate 14.
“He looks super and he’s come on a lot,” Casey said of the colt.
“He’s got a bit more scope than her (Maria Lucia), so we’re not sure if he’ll go the Placid Ark or Guineas. He was over the 1000 and 1200m last prep but I think he could go either way.
“He’s drawn awkwardly and it’s hard to see where he gets to and where the speed (in the race) will come from.”
The Casey’s champion three-year-old Beatty is engaged to start in a 1000m trial at Belmont on Monday morning.
He will instead target the $500,000 WA Guineas (1600m) run a week after the Placid Ark.
“He’s trialling next week and he’ll go first-up into the Belgravia Stakes, two weeks after that,” Casey said.
“He’s definitely going to the Guineas.”
Earlier on Saturday’s programme, the top conditioners will present a pair of juveniles for the first two-year-old race of the season.
Sprint For Glory ($8) and Masquerade Man ($12) both won 400m trials on September 29 and are kept safe in betting.
“Both are very nice,” Casey said. “We were planning on trialling them again, but they extended nominations, so we’ll treat this like a trial.”
+ Warwoven ($2.25f) is a warm favourite to continue his Group 1-winning ways in the Caulfield Guineas (1600m), though punters refuse to let Blind Raise ($3.60) slip under their guard.
