Urquharts Bluff produced yet another boilover result to salute at Belmont on Saturday, scoring at long odds for the second time in three weeks.

The Paul Jordan-trained four-year-old, who won at $20 on June 27 when racing over 1400m, was sent off a $16 chance in this weekend’s 1200m event.

Lisa Staples positioned Urquharts Bluff just better than midfield in the one-wide line with plenty of cover before producing him to the outside at the top of the straight.

By the time the field reached the 200m, a frantic front-running pace had folded, and Urquharts Bluff had stormed to claim the front.

Kept up to his work by Staples, the Sessions gelding kept up the gallop to win by a length and a half.

“I knew Norich would be really quick because that’s his pattern of racing and I said to Lisa, ‘if you can be one-out and one-back or one-out and two-back, perfect’ and she did that,” Jordan said.

“As soon as he pulled out at the top of the straight, he just gathered them in really quickly.”

Jordan said retirement beckons for him personally, but a group of well-performed horses were keeping him at the races.

“I didn’t buy any yearlings at the sales, so we’ll go through this group of horses, and we’ll go from there,” Jordan said.

“I said I’ll retire when they’re all finished, so they thought they better lift their game because they like living at home.”

The veteran trainer has been experiencing a purple patch of form with other horses such as mile specialist Battle Commander and Pony Up with the latter earlier finishing third in the Belmont Classic.

Riding honours for the afternoon were shared by William Pike, who supplemented his classic win with a later success aboard Western Miss ($1.60f), and Lucy Fiore.

Fiore emerged victorious with the Grant and Alana Williams-trained Mt Shirataku ($8), giving the Williamses a valuable win in their current premiership battle with Michael Grantham, before winning the final even aboard the Dan Morton-prepared In Confidence ($3.20f).

Fellow hoop Paul Harvey stumped a plunge on Godspeed ($16 into $4.20f) in the first race by snatching a short-neck success when steering They’reallsisters ($6.50).
