Perth Scorchers’ star openers Beth Mooney and Sophie Devine named in WBBL Team of the Tournament
Beth Mooney and Sophie Devine’s superb form at the top of the order for the Perth Scorchers has been rewarded, with the star duo named in the Women’s Big Bash League Team of the Tournament.
It’s the third consecutive nod for Perth’s impressive opening partnership, while New Zealand import Devine also earned captaincy duties after leading the Scorchers to a top of the table finish and straight into the final for WBBL07.
Devine has clocked up 400 runs at an average of 33.91 this season, with a high score of 101, while also claiming nine wickets.
The Scorchers skipper single-handedly smashed the women in orange to two Super Over wins and is one of just two international players (alongside Melbourne Renegades’ Harmanpreet Kaur) to feature in the best XI.
At the other end, Mooney finished the regular season with 528 runs at an average of 52.80 and a high score of 101 not out.
The Australian representative also took the gloves for the Scorchers again this season, taking four catches and completing two stumpings for the tournament.
Mooney was not named as the official wicketkeeper in the team, selected by former Australian players Lisa Sthalekar and Mel Jones, national selector Shawn Fleger and journalist Laura Jolly.
Brisbane Heat star Georgia Redmayne was given the gig, while teammates Grace Harris and Jess Jonassen were also named in the XI.
The Adelaide Strikers has three representatives - Tahlia McGrath, Amanda-Jade Wellington and Darcie Brown - while Sydney Thunder (Hannah Darlington) and Hobart Hurricanes (Tayla Vlaminck) each had one.
Renegades coach Simon Helmot was appointed as coach.
It comes as the Scorchers prepare to host the WBBL final on Saturday, with The Eliminator and The Challenger to decide their opponent.
The Heat will take on the Strikers in the first do-or-die clash on Wednesday and the winner of that match will face the Renegades the following day.
The victor will then travel to Optus Stadium to battle it out with the Scorchers for the WBBL title.
