Chelsea super striker Sam Kerr has won the Women’s Super League Player of the Year award to cap off a memorable season.

The Matildas captain was the firm favourite to take out the gong after being named the UK Football Writers’ top player last month.

Kerr scored twice on the final day of the season to lead Chelsea to a 4-2 victory over Manchester United that secured the league title.

The brace took her tally to 20 goals for the season and earned her the Golden Boot award.

The second of those strikes, which came when Kerr controlled the ball on her chest around 25 yards out before turning and volleying home, was named WSL goal of the season.

Chelsea’s league triumph, finishing a point ahead of second-placed Arsenal, was part of a double, with the Blues then beating Manchester City 3-2 after extra time in the Women’s FA Cup final.

Chelsea’s Emma Hayes unsurprisingly took out the manager’s award.

Hayes, who has been in charge at the Chelsea since 2012, oversaw their third successive WSL title triumph and fifth in total.
